The inaugural SCALE Green conference, held on April 23rd at Lumiere London, was a landmark event spearheaded by the SCALE family and top sustainability experts like Vanessa de Souza Lage, Marc Ribail, Nikki Mattei, and Bob Garner. The conference’s mission was clear: to equip property managers with the tools and knowledge needed to weave sustainability into the fabric of their business operations.

A resounding success

The SCALE Green 2024 event remarkably succeeded in aligning industry leaders on integrating sustainability into their business ethos. The conference attracted a diverse group of attendees, all motivated by a shared passion for sustainable progress. The atmosphere was charged, with each talk and panel discussion igniting robust conversations around innovative and actionable solutions.

What we covered

The conference agenda was meticulously designed to cover all key aspects of sustainability applicable to the short-term rental industry.

  1. The day began with an exploration of the economic viability of sustainability, during which Bob Garner and Nikki Mattei underscored the tangible business benefits drawn from the annual Booking.com Sustainable Travel Report. This session highlighted how sustainable practices can not only meet increasing consumer demands but also enhance profitability, brand differentiation, and future-proof businesses against environmental and market changes.

  1. Attention then shifted towards reducing environmental impacts, focusing on energy and resource conservation. Leaders in the field, such as Graham Donoghue from Forge Holiday Group, shared actionable insights, like adopting 100% renewable energy tariffs and installing flow restrictors to conserve water. The conversation extended into effective waste management strategies, advocating for the use of recycled materials and digital alternatives to reduce physical waste.

  2. Social responsibility and community engagement were also the focal points. Dale Smith from Host & Stay illustrated how integrating local communities and economies into business models supports local development and enhances guest experiences through initiatives like StayLocal. Furthermore, discussions on employee engagement highlighted initiatives such as paid volunteer days, which enrich community relations and strengthen employee satisfaction and loyalty.

  3. Governance and regulatory aspects were deeply analysed, especially during Ufi Ibrahim’s session from the Energy and Environmental Alliance. She highlighted the critical role of governance and compliance in sustainability, particularly the need for robust ESG strategies and transparent reporting to meet regulatory standards and manage investment risks.

  4. The role of certifications and consumer engagement was also discussed, with Vanessa de Souza Lage and Marc Ribail explaining the advantages of sustainability certifications like Sustonica and QALIA for property managers. These certifications help properties measure and understand their impact while also serving as a marketing tool to attract conscious travellers.

Finally, innovative solutions were spotlighted during the business pitch session, where 9 companies presented their products and services designed to help property managers effortlessly implement more sustainable practices.

        A different kind of conference

What truly set SCALE Green apart was its unwavering focus on actionable outcomes. Unlike other conferences, where sustainability might be a sideline discussion, here, it was the centrepiece. The day was carefully designed to ensure that every participant was left with a blueprint for action, whether it was adopting new sustainability certifications, engaging in community projects, or switching to eco-friendly suppliers.

        Ongoing support for participants

SCALE Green is deeply committed to supporting delegates on their sustainability journey beyond the conference itself. Each attendee was equipped with a partially completed Sustainability Action Plan, designed to kick-start the integration of sustainable practices within their operations. Participants also received access to a comprehensive Digital Delegate Guide filled with actionable tools and resources.
